A few days ago I saw the video of the program «Pastilla busca malaltia» on the TV3 television channel, which deals with the strategy of selling and prescribing medicines of dubious efficacy or even dangerous. Of particular interest is the story of the drug Agreal®, and look how the world turns, I even prescribed it myself! Those were times when we were almost convinced, or let ourselves be convinced, that we had to try to treat everything. Stories like this unfortunately only increase our growing skepticism and distrust of many of the supposed therapeutic innovations that are regularly presented to us.
However, without a great deal of effort, a few examples come to mind of how easy it is to fall back into the trap of lack of information and disinterest in informing oneself and one’s patients:
«Levosulpiride is a substituted benzamide antipsychotic, reported to be a selective antagonist ofdopamine D2 receptor activity on both central and peripheral levels. It is an atypical neuroleptic and aprokinetic agent. Levosulpiride is also claimed to have mood elevating properties. Levosulpiride is used in the treatment of psychoses, particularly negative symptoms of schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, dysthymia, vertigo, dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome and premature ejaculation.»
